A zip file is a compact, compressed folder.   It can contain one file,
many files, or many sub-folders of files.   It can even contain
another zip file.   The files can be heavily compressed, some
compressed, or not at all compressed.

The zip file can have files added to, deleted from, extracted from it.
The compressed files can be in full path form, or simply be in the zip
file by file name.   They can be extracted using their path names,
or only their file names.   They can be password protected.

ziw, and zid are all tools that make handling zip files very easy. There are two downloads for these programs:

package description --------- ---------------------------------------------- 1) p01Uz.exe controls Pkware software; contains the p01.exe module; needs the pk250dos.exe shareware download from Pkware, for zipping/unzipping. 2) ziwUz.exe controls Info-Zip software; contains ziw, zid and all Info-Zip modules needed for use. --------- ----------------------------------------------

------------------------------------ p01/zid/ziw PROGRAM INFORMATION ------------------------------------ P01 is a front end module for the PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE zip programs from Pkware Inc. These programs are DOS based and run in the command mode. Zid and ziw are front end modules for the Info-Zip programs, zip.exe, unzip.exe, zip16.exe, unzip32.exe. Zid runs the DOS zip programs and ziw runs the ones for Windows. Ziw can be be run under DOS, by using the zw.BAT batch file. Zid runs the smaller ones; and the zid package can be made more compact, to be used on an emergency boot disk. The Info-Zip software runs in the command mode. The members of the p01 family build the DOS commands, for the zip programs, and then run the commands. These commands, in turn, zip and un-zip the zip files. The user is freed from having to key in the rather intricate commands, and can concentrate more on the zip files and their contents. The p01 family members have added options, slanted towards dealing with the zip, compressed files. --------------------------------------------------------------- DOS Based ----------- The p01 family members are DOS based programs that run under Windows 9x, and can run in a MS-DOS only environment. Under Windows, they run in DOS windows, defined by PIF's (program information files). --------------------------------------------------------------- ..........Operating a p01 family member....... General -------- There is no long training session needed to learn how to use the programs. One merely positions the reverse print over the entry in the directory report, and the reverse print on the option in the option table. Then one punches the enter key. This is rather similar to the old pong game, where the files on on the screen left, and the options are on the screen right. To change sides, one punches a horizontal arrow key. Shortcut keys are alternatives to the enter key for selecting options; they are listed to the left of the option names. To change directories, punch Enter, when an entry is a directory name and the directory report side is active. The directory will change if the line has a `Dir' in it, or if the entry is the top line of the report. The active side can be determined by the color of the highlight; black is for active, blue is for un-active; there is a small arrow in screen upper right, showing which side is the active one. The Option Table ----------------- The option table is located in the upper right of the screen. Shortcut Key Functions -------- ---------------------------------------------------- 0 for keying in and issuing dos commands. 1 toggle directory report to & from `directories only' mode. 2 view contents of zip file. 3 extract files from zip file. 4 compress files into old or new zip file. 5 deletes file or directory. 6 search for zip files in directory & sub-directories. 7 view contents of a file in zip file. 8 create a new sub-directory. 9 add a comment to zip file. e edit/change directory report line. k maintain/update/review key memory t change default text editor, for reading files. x exit. -------- -------------------------------------------------- Directory Report Options ------------------------ Key Functions =============== ================================================= Enter performs appropriate function on directory entry. vert arrows move directory report entry up/down 1 line. horz arrows exit directory report, enter options list. PageUp pages directory report up Ctrl+PageUp moves directory report entry to top. PageDown pages directory report down Ctrl+PageDown moves directory report entry to end. Esc exits directory report, enter options list. x exits directory report, enter options list. -------- ------------------------------------------------- The Directory Report --------------------- The report appears in a 43X23 character box in the left part of the screen. The fields covered are name, file attributes, file size, and when last updated. Also, directories and disk labels are flagged. The entries are chronologically sorted, from earliest to latest. The last entry is the `disks' line, where the computer's disk letters are listed. The first line is always the directory of the report. The directory disk can be changed by positioning the reverse print over the disk letter and pressing the enter key. --------------------------------------------------------------- Key Mmemory ------------ The keyboard input functions use a memory of previously keyed in strings. The memory uses the regular cursor movement keys: Left, Right, Home, End, Backspace.
